What to Expect from Psychotherapy

What to Expect from Individual Psychotherapy

Usually a brief telephone conversation starts the process. When we meet for the first time I invite you to tell me what is going on in your life that is causing you difficulty. For example this could be your relationship problems, life stress, anxiety symptoms or concerns about your mood.

Together we consider the information and how we might proceed with therapy.

The decision to proceed with therapy is mutual. We decide how this process might be helpful to you and the specific focus of our work together.

Typically I start with once weekly meetings and as therapy progresses the meetings may decrease in frequency depending on a person's process.

What to Expect from Couples Therapy

I work essentially as a consultant to your relationship and work with you to establish a focus for therapy that is mutually agreed upon.

When I meet with a couple for the first time, I orient myself to the particular relationship concern and the situational context of the problem. I ask each person to describe their perspective of what is going on in the relationship and what they would like to change. I also invite you to tell the story of your relationship so we can understand the unique patterns of connections and disconnections and events in your relationship.

Typically we meet altogether for the initial 1-2 sessions and then I will meet with each member of the couple for an individual meeting to complete the evaluation. The initial meeting is scheduled for an hour and a half with subsequent meetings lasting an hour.

We meet usually once weekly as therapy commences and review scheduling requirements as the therapy progresses.

Office Hours

Hours are Monday to Friday 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

Fees

My fees for psychotherapy services are charged on an hourly basis. Payment is made at the end of each session and I provide a receipt. Most extended health benefits plans through your employer provide some coverage for a registered psychologist. The fees are also tax deductible as a medical expense. Payment is by cheque, cash or bank e-transfer.

Please note: Other fees may apply in legal cases, for example if I am retained to provide assessment services for legal purposes or to give expert testimony.

All fees are reviewed annually.
